Atlantic Salmon Farming in BC

Farming Atlantic Salmon in BC’s Strait of Georgia has been promoted for its potential to ease world hunger and improve Canada’s food security. Promoters of Atlantic salmon farming point out that farmed sea food provides a healthful alternative to land-based meat proteins and that mariculture (farming sea food in the ocean) is a sustainable economic activity with growth potential. However, salmon mariculture in the Strait of Georgia also has drawbacks, including environmental degradation, impacts to the wild Pacific salmon fishery, and aquatic disease.
